for SA(T)B chorus, organ, opt. narrator, and opt. assembly
text from John 8:31-36, and Martin Luther
music by ZMH, with ERHALT UNS, HERR
Continue in My Word pairs Jesus' words to the disciples in John 8:31-36 with the first stanza of Martin Luther's "Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word" to highlight the relationship between discipleship and freedom. The optional narration adds the portions of the John text which are not sung; assembly may join the choir on the hymn stanza. Smaller ensembles may perform Continue in My Word as an SAB or STB anthem.
Commissioned by St. John's Lutheran Church, Zanesville, Ohio, in commemoration of its 175th anniversary.
for SAB chorus, piano, and flute
text from John 10:27-28, Henry W. Baker, and Isaac Watts;
Swedish translation by Jenny Willén
music by ZMH, with RESIGNATION and ST. COLUMBA
Gehrmans Musikförlag, GE 12446
Den gode herden is a Swedish edition of The Good Shepherd.
"This piece skillfully weaves several different melodic and textual strands together. Highben first sets verses from John 10 to a newly composed melody, presented by the men. As this melody repeats, he adds the first stanza of My Shepherd, You Supply My Need, set to RESIGNATION, then adds a soprano countermelody. After a brief interlude, the piece concludes with the final stanza of The King of Love My Shepherd Is, set to ST. COLUMBA. Motives from the countermelody and the John 10 melody return, bringing the anthem to a peaceful close."

for SAB chorus and organ
text by Brian Wren
tune from The Southern Harmony, 1835, arr. ZMH
Augsburg Fortress, 9781506422060
Brian Wren's hymn focuses on the communal nature of Christian worship, centered in the cross and the celebration of communion. Though this exuberant choral setting of Wren's text and its tune (DOVE OF PEACE) can be quickly learned, there are some delightful moments of text painting, particularly in the third and fifth stanzas. Thematically appropriate for gathering, communion, Christian unity, and confession/forgiveness.
For the choirs of the Muskingum Conference, Southern Ohio Synod (ELCA), and the Conference-Wide Eucharist, November 1, 2015.
for 2-part mixed chorus and organ
text from Luke 24 and Thomas Aquinas
The meal from the road to Emmaus narrative is sung to a mystical, chant-like melody surrounded by a "halo" of organ accompaniment. The incorporation of a stanza of Thee We Adore / ADORO TE DEVOTE makes this anthem appropriate for Communion as well as Eastertide.
Also appears in the collection O Lord of Light: Nine Two-Part Mixed Anthems for the Church Year, MSM 55-9930.
Commissioned for the Choir of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church (Chicago, IL), Scott Weidler, Cantor.

Augsburg Choral Hymn Series

A reflective, peaceful setting of Carolyn Jennings' tune for this Trinitarian, creation-themed text adapted from the writings of Julian of Norwich (1342-1416), the Christian mystic.
