A Lenten Reflection

for SATB chorus, and organ or strings

text by Madeleine L’Engle

Music from Duke Chapel Series
MorningStar Music, 50-5026

listen

This is a setting of Madeleine L'Engle’s poem “For Lent, 1966,” as it appears in The Ordering of Love: New and Collected Poems of Madeleine L’Engle. Appropriate for any time during the Lenten season, the poem reflects on the tension between the desire to choose one’s own Lenten discipline, and the openness to Christ’s calling that is a mark of discipleship. The music explores that paradox through tension in the choral harmonies and the accompaniment, which may be played by organ or string quartet (separate string score available from the publisher).
